Tome, New Mexico
Hazard Data Summary
Threat Summary
Tome faces a critical environmental hazard score of 10.0 due to its proximity to the Los Lunas Chemical Cache. This active Superfund site contains high levels of mercury, a dangerous heavy metal. Mercury can seep into the soil and groundwater, potentially affecting the safety of local water supplies and garden produce. For residents, this means common activities like playing in the dirt or drinking unfiltered well water could lead to toxic exposure. Protective measures are necessary to prevent long-term health issues.
